The role of the Technician / Programmer is to properly and efficiently, troubleshoot, repair, program, calibrate, and maintain our customers’ process, facility, and laboratory equipment and instrumentation. This equipment may include but will not be limited to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens, Variable Frequency Drive’s (VFD’s), DC Drives, SERVO systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications, Level and temperature controllers, chart and chartless recorders, motor starters and controllers, timers, network and radio equipment, and any other industrial or municipal control component or system.

 

The individual will need a high level of instrumentation and controls knowledge, skills and experience in order to thoroughly assess any problems with the equipment and systems, identify the problems, make the necessary repairs and then complete all associated documentation needed to appropriately document the work performed (e.g. work orders, change controls, etc). A high level of knowledge and skill utilizing tools such as basic hand tools, multi-meters, process calibrators, Windows-based PC’s with specialty software is required.  A high level of AC and DC drive experience is desirable.

This individual will also need the appropriate personnel skills needed to work with many different customers, supervisors and peers to obtain information needed to assess equipment problems in a courteous / professional demeanor, as well as coordinate and oversee the work of vendor technical personnel.

 

Other essential functions this individual will need are as follows:

1.       Perform all activities in compliance with company, OSHA, MOSHA, NEC and NFPA safety policies, procedures and practices.

2.       Responsible for conveying the Company’s attitude towards quality, safety and professionalism to our customers, vendors, fellow workers and other employees.

3.       Assist in supervising activities of self and other employees or contractors when appropriate.

4.       Effectively communicate with Managers, Supervisors, peers and subordinates.  Notify management or other qualified personnel if specifications cannot be met and/or quality or safety is being compromised.

5.       Expertly operate tools such as PCs and various interface hardware and software to support automation platforms/components such as PLCs and HMIs.

6.       Perform advanced level repairs and troubleshooting.

7.       Develops and writes equipment calibration procedures.

8.       Maintain calibration database as required.

9.       Communicate if any safety equipment is not functional and if any employee does not practice proper safety procedures.

10.    Exercise excellent technical, mechanical and control system aptitude / skills in order to accurately identify root causes for machine failures or break downs and the repair accordingly.

11.    Adhere to company policies and procedures.

12.    Read, understand and comply with SOP’s.

13.    Read and understand technical information provided in equipment manuals and any associated electrical or mechanical drawings.

14.    Able to read and understand PLC (programmable logic controller) control logic, as well as other configurable controllers such as VFDs, relay logic, etc.

15.    Maintain work areas in a neat, organized and uncluttered state

16.    Document all activities as required by SOP, Policy or other work instruction.

17.    Deliver all services with a craftsman like manner and quality.

18.    Overtime work may be required during standard shifts or on weekends to assure production schedules are met, as well as to maintain customer delivery or maintenance schedules.

19.    Work on other projects as requested by management.

20.    Stay current with evolving controls and communication technology.

21.    Must be physically capable of climbing ladders, working with minute hardware, working in a lying position, working with arms extended overhead.

 

Proper and safe operation of any powered hand tools, un-powered hand tools and related equipment used in the expected normal course of duties.

 

II.           Physical Work Activities and Exposure:

 

1.       Work is regularly performed inside in an office, inside a manufacturing environment, and outdoors.

2.       Exposure to dust, odor, noise, fumes.

3.       Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 to 75 pounds.

4.       The noise level varies according to location, but is usually moderate.

5.       Frequent standing, sitting, talking, or hearing.

6.       Use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects or controls.

7.       Reach with hands and arms.

8.       Walk long distances, sometimes on slippery surfaces.

9.      Able to drive company vehicle to and from jobsite without restriction.

 

III.         Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

·   Requires: High school diploma or equivalent.

·   Requires: Valid Driver’s License in good standing

·   Desirable: Associate’s or B.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering Science, Engineering Technology or related discipline.

Experience:

·         Desirable: 5 years of hands-on calibration, instrumentation and electronic equipment/controls maintenance experience.

·         Desirable:  5 years in the food, water, wastewater, plastics, printing, or other related industry or equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

·         Desirable:  5 years of AC & DC Drive experience

.         Desirable:  5 years of PLC programming experience.
